Questions and answers

Short answers first, then the details. Rules answers carry the date we checked them and a link to the Fish and Boat Commission page they summarise.

Do I need a permit to kayak in Pennsylvania?

Yes, at Fish and Boat Commission lakes and access areas and at state park and state forest access areas, a kayak needs a Pennsylvania boat registration or a launch permit (PFBC or DCNR State Parks). Either one is enough.

How much is a Pennsylvania launch permit?

PFBC sells launch permits for unpowered boats in one-year and two-year terms, plus agent and transaction fees; the current prices, checked 4 Oct 2026, are on our paddling rules page with a link to PFBC's fee table.

Should I get a launch permit or register my kayak?

Either one lets an unpowered boat use PFBC and state park or forest access areas. A registration is recognised by other states; a launch permit is not, and a launch permit does not include mooring privileges.

Do I need a permit for a paddleboard in Pennsylvania?

Yes. PFBC counts stand-up paddleboards as unpowered boats, so at PFBC and state park or forest access areas a paddleboard needs a registration or a launch permit, just like a kayak.

Do you have to wear a life jacket kayaking in Pennsylvania?

From November 1 through April 30 you must wear one on a canoe, kayak or paddleboard. The rest of the year each person must have one aboard, and children 12 and under must wear one.

What is Pennsylvania's life jacket law for kids?

Children 12 and under must wear a life jacket while underway on boats 20 feet or less and on canoes, kayaks and paddleboards.

Do I need a light to kayak at night in Pennsylvania?

Yes: carry a hand-held light if you are out between sunset and sunrise, and carry a sound-producing device at all times (PFBC says a coach's whistle is acceptable).

Which Pennsylvania lakes are quiet enough for kayaking?

79 of the LakePA 100 lakes are Quiet Water: their rules allow only paddle craft and electric-motor boats, or no motors at all. See the Quiet Water list; each lake page cites its source.

Where can I kayak near me?

Pick a city page (Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Harrisburg, Allentown–Bethlehem, Scranton–Wilkes-Barre, State College, Erie, Lancaster, Reading, York, Williamsport, Altoona–Johnstown, Cleveland–Youngstown or New York–North Jersey), or use “Near me” on your list.

Where do I put in at a lake?

Every lake page lists its public put-ins with coordinates (about ±50 m), the ramp or launch type, parking as the source lists it, and links to Apple Maps, Google Maps and the NWS forecast.

Is the LakePA 100 run by the state?

No. It is an independent, commercial publication of WeldonPC, not affiliated with the Fish and Boat Commission, DCNR, the Corps of Engineers or any park, passport or challenge program. Posted signs and official notices always control.

What if a lake on the list is drawn down or closed?

Check its notice box. Lakes with a dated closure or drawdown are moved to the alternates for the season, and any alternate you paddle counts toward your total and its region.

Is there a printable kayak checklist for Pennsylvania?

Yes, free: open the full list and print it for a plain checklist of all 100 lakes. The paid Field Log and Wall Map are designed printables with put-ins, log boxes and a map.

How did you choose the 100 lakes?

From public sources: lakes with a documented public put-in for hand-carried boats, at least 20 acres, unpowered boats allowed, and no active closure. Every region has at least 12; more put-ins, quieter water and nearness to a city break ties.

Do alternates count?

Yes. An alternate counts toward your total (up to 100) and toward its own region's milestone.

Is the Great Lakes shoreline on the list?

No. The LakePA 100 covers inland lakes and reservoirs only; Lake Erie and Presque Isle Bay are not on the list.

Do I need an account to track my lakes?

No. Your list is stored on your device. A save link moves it between devices, and a JSON file backs it up. We never see your list unless you send it to a paid certificate.

What does “Checked Oct 2026” mean?

It is the date we last compared that lake's facts with the cited sources. After 12 months without a re-check, the page shows an amber “Due for a re-check” badge; confirm with the operator before you go.

Are the certificates verified?

No. Certificates are self-reported and say so on the page: “Self-reported achievement. LakePA 100 does not verify paddling records.”

Is there a winter or cold-season milestone?

No, on purpose. Pennsylvania requires life jackets to be worn on canoes, kayaks and paddleboards from November 1 through April 30, and cold water is dangerous. We don't reward cold-season paddling.
